without realizing the program goes much further, and that levels five through eight certify entirely different roles.
A certification is a commitment. Choosing the wrong level costs twelve to eighteen months. Here is what each level covers and who it is built for.

- NSE 1 / NSE 2 / NSE 3 AWARENESS
Threat landscape, cybersecurity fundamentals, Fortinet product overview. Free online courses. No hands-on requirement.
Built for: non-technical staff, sales, and beginners building foundational awareness. Not an engineering certification.
- NSE 4 NETWORK SECURITY PROFESSIONAL
FortiGate core. Security policies, NAT, VPN, routing, authentication, SSL inspection, application control. The entry point for Fortinet engineers.
Built for: administrators managing FortiGate firewalls in production. The minimum expected level for field roles.
- NSE 5 NETWORK SECURITY ANALYST
Management and visibility tools. Three specializations: FortiManager (centralized policy management), FortiAnalyzer (log analysis and reporting), FortiSIEM (security event correlation).
Built for: engineers operating multi-site Fortinet environments or SOC analysts handling threat analysis and compliance reporting.
- NSE 6 NETWORK SECURITY SPECIALIST
Product-specific depth. Specializations include FortiWeb (WAF), FortiMail (email security), FortiNAC (network access control), FortiAuthenticator (identity), FortiSandbox (malware analysis), and cloud integrations.
Built for: engineers who own a specific security layer — not generalists. Pick the specialization that matches your actual stack.
- NSE 7 NETWORK SECURITY ARCHITECT
Advanced architecture. Concentrations: Enterprise Firewall, SD-WAN, OT Security, Public Cloud Security. Design-level knowledge — troubleshooting complex deployments, integrating Fortinet solutions at scale.
Built for: senior engineers and architects designing multi-product Fortinet environments. This is where generalist ends and specialist begins.
- NSE 8 NETWORK SECURITY EXPERT
Lab exam. No multiple choice. Full deployment, troubleshooting, and design scenarios under time pressure. The hardest certification in the Fortinet program — and one of the hardest in the industry.
Built for: engineers with deep, multi-year Fortinet experience across firewall, switching, wireless, and cloud. A rare credential.
The level defines the role you are certifying for.
NSE 4 is not NSE 7. NSE 5 FortiSIEM is not NSE 6 FortiWeb. One is operations. The other is architecture. The other is analytics. They are three different jobs.
